Glossary


Acid Free:  Addresses the problem of preserving documents and artwork for long periods.

Acco-Bind:  An all-inclusive binding system. Binds reports produced on 3-hole paper. The system includes acco fasteners, clear covers and black vinyl back. Can accommodate reports up to 4” thick. Easily accommodates page replacement.

Ammonia (diazo) Blueline:  Employing UV light and ammonia, a print is produced from a translucent original. Examples of translucent originals include vellum, mylar, and acetate. Prints are positive to positive.

Bleed:  An extra amount of printed image which extends beyond the trim edge of the sheet or page. Click here for instructions

Blind Embossing:  A design which is stamped without metallic leaf or ink, giving a bas-relief effect.

CMYK:  Acronym for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black – subtractive primary colors. Printing colors for process color reproduction.

Comb-Bind (GBC):  Uses a round plastic spine to attach the pages. Document will lay flat.

Crop Marks:  Marks placed on the paper to indicate the edge of the page.

Die-Cutting:  The process of using sharp steel rules to cut special shapes from printed sheets.

Embossing:  Impressing an image in relief to achieve a raised surface.

Engineering Bond Paper:

The most common color is white. Ours is 30% RECYCLED with a thickness of 20lb. For presentation purposes we also carry 32lb white paper.  Other 20lb papers include paper colors of blue, green, pink and yellow.

EPS:  Encapsulated PostScript.

Fastback (tape) Bind:  Uses a thermal fabric strip that adheres to the spine. A less expensive alternative to perfect bind.

Foam Board:  Lightweight, all-purpose board with memory. Consists of an inner layer of polystyrene foam clad with an outer facing paper.

Lamination:  A plastic film bonded by heat and pressure to a printed sheet for protection and appearance.

Gator Board:  An extruded polystyrene foam board bonded between two layers of wood-fiber veneer. Heavy duty and versatile.

Ink Jet Paper:

The most common color is white. Ours is 30% RECYCLED with a thickness of 20lb. For presentation purposes we also carry presentation bond paper with a thickness of 24lb/100gsm; 35lb/130gsm; 46lb/170gsm and 55lb/210gsm. Other specialty papers include PhotoSatin / PhotoGloss / Arches Watercolor. We welcome special requests.

PDF:  Portable Document File.

Perfect Bind:  A soft cover binding method where the pages and cover are glued as one. The cover wraps around the spine. A paperback novel in one example of perfect bind.

Plastic Core Board (Corr-X):  Plastic board with corrugated support. Excellent for outdoor use.

Printer Spreads:  Not in consecutive page order.  They are in proper order so that when the document is printed all the pages appear consecutively.

Reader Spreads:  Shows consecutive pages in the correct order for someone to read the document.

Ream:  500-sheets of paper (usually).

Reprography:  Copying and duplicating.

RGB:  Red, Green, Blue – additive primary colors.

Scan:  The conversion of a printed piece to a digital format.

Score:  To impress or indent a mark in the paper to make folding easier.

Screw Post Bind:  Using hole punched paper, it is a method where a screw and post holds a document together. Also referred to as Chicago Screws.

Sintra Board:  Made of PVC. Excellent for outdoor use.

TIFF:  Tagged Image File Format.

Trim Marks:  Marks placed on the paper to indicate the edge of the page.  Also referred to as crops marks.

Velo Bind:  Two plastic elements that are heat sealed in the back and then hot knife cut. Extremely strong and durable.

Wire-O Binding:  A continuous double series of metal wire loops run through punched slots along the binding side of a booklet. Allow 3/16” for binding. Color choices include black, white and silver. Document will lay flat.

With the Grain:  Folding or feeding paper into a press parallel to the grain of the paper. To prevent cracking, best to fold with the grain.
